UPDATE: Tickets are sold out as of Dec. 19, 2023.

In 2024, the Hollin Hills community will mark its 75th anniversary, and one popular event that will be making its celebratory return is the biennial Hollins Hills House + Garden Tour. Tickets are on sale now for the May 4 event and are expected to sell out quickly.

Around a dozen mid-century modern homes and gardens will be showcased during the self-guided walking tour, and at various times and locations, artists, architects and designers will be available to discuss their work. The four focus areas — or pillars — of the tour are architecture, interior design, art and sculpture, and landscaping, gardens and parks.

One brand-new feature of the 2024 tour is the availability of shuttle bus service. According to committee chair Heather Shuster, organizers have partnered with Old Town Trolley to alleviate traffic issues and provide visitors with easy transport throughout the neighborhood. Guests can park in designated parking lots and catch a shuttle to a convenient drop-off location near clusters of homes on the tour.

Like the last House + Garden tour — held back in September 2021 — the one next spring will feature a morning Cars and Coffee event with vintage automobiles and a morning yoga event. Mid-century artist Shag has been commissioned to develop the 2024 tour poster, which will feature the neighborhood’s developer Robert Davenport and architect Charles Goodman. Davenport and Goodman built the Hollin Hills homes between the late 1940s and early 1970s.

First held in 1953, the Hollin Hills House + Garden Tour started taking place every two years in 2006. The last tour was bumped from 2020 to September 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shuster said they expect to sell as many as 2,000 tickets to the 2024 tour.

“We have folks come from all along the East Coast as the tour has picked up momentum,” said Shuster. “There are limited mid-century modern tours on the East Coast.”

The tour will run from noon to 6 p.m. on May 4 and take place rain or shine. Ticket prices range from $55-$95, with VIP ticket holders eligible for early entry at 11 a.m. Children under the age of 12 are admitted for free but must be supervised closely. Registration and ticket pick-up will take place at Hollin Meadows Elementary School from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the day of the tour — starting at 10 a.m. for VIP ticket holders.

Sponsorships are also available. Sponsors and homeowners are entitled to attend the tour after-party, which will serve as a 75th anniversary celebration. Proceeds from the tour benefit the Civic Association of Hollin Hills and its efforts to preserve and enhance the historic community.
