Update: Former Safeway soon to start conversion into international supermarket

The long vacant Safeway space at Mount Vernon Square has officially been taken over by Fresh World and is expected to start undergoing construction and renovation by year’s end, according to Joshua Kim, a representative of the Fresh World affiliate that purchased the shopping center back in July 2023.

When the affiliate made the acquisition, company officials began negotiations with Safeway because the grocer still held a lease on its space through April 2026. The two parties came to an agreement, Kim recently told On the MoVe, and a “Coming Soon” banner for Fresh World has since appeared on the building.

On the MoVe reached out to KLNB, property manager for Mount Vernon Square, for additional details but did not hear back in time for publication.

Fresh World bills itself as an American and international supermarket and has other locations in Springfield, Herndon, Manassas and Woodbridge.
