The Nepenthe Gallery and resident photographer Renee C. Gage are seeking submissions from local high school and college students for potential inclusion in a special student art exhibition at the gallery next month.
Students can submit up to three images of 2-D, 3-D and/or photography works — regardless of their creation date — via a special website by July 22. Several Nepenthe Gallery team members will judge the entries and select 15 of them for the gallery’s “Student Art Anthology.” The selected works will be displayed at the gallery’s ART + WINE + CHEESE event on August 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and remain on display until August 13.
The owners of the gallery, Carrie and Jim Garland, decided to organize the exhibition as a way of bringing the community together and looking for what’s fresh and new in the young art scene, according to Beth Hamed, a Nepenthe Gallery team member.
Hamed said she hoped the gallery’s outreach to schools and community members via social media platforms like Instagram would help spread awareness and interest in the event.
“We’re looking forward to it,” said Hamed. “It would be great if there are a lot of submissions.”
The Nepenthe Gallery, which opened at Hollin Hall Shopping Center earlier this year and features the work of many local artists, is located at 7918 Fort Hunt Road.

Yea! Ericka, thanks for the great news and keeping the community informed of what's happening locally.
Ericka, thanks for sharing. I haven't seen any notice or coverage about this project by the Bureau of Land Management except for your "On the MoVe" posts. Thanks for helping to keep the community informed. Recommend that readers review and submit comments. From my listening to the meeting, I get the sense that
I am strongly opposed to any expansion of parking at the Mustang Loop parking lot. I support repaving with a permeable material. In my opinion, moving the pollinator garden is a waste of county resources. It adds a valued bit of nature to an otherwise sterile parking area and pavilion.
Erika, thanks for the update.
You're welcome!
