Inova Mount Vernon to debut in-house critical illness recovery hospital in 2023

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital (IMVH) began construction this past May on its new 32-bed critical illness recovery hospital (CIRH) scheduled to open in the first half of 2023.

The facility — which will provide high quality, specialized care for chronic and critically ill patients who no longer require intensive care services — will occupy existing space on the fourth floor of IMVH, said a hospital spokesperson. IMVH’s decision to use existing space was based on an analysis of bed need showing adequate availability of inpatient beds for communities within the hospital’s service area, the spokesperson added.

Last month, Inova Health System announced that a Pennsylvania-based operator of critical illness recovery hospitals, Select Medical, would jointly own and operate IMVH’s new facility. As the majority owner and managing partner, Select Medical will be involved with Inova’s build-out of the “hospital-in-hospital” and provide staffing for the facility. Around 100 clinical and operational leaders and staff will ultimately be hired, said a Select Medical spokesperson.

Once IMVH’s new specialty hospital opens, patients from all five Inova hospitals in Northern Virginia will be able to transfer patients there instead of to post-acute care facilities in other parts of the state or in the District of Columbia.

“As the president of Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, it is a privilege to have our hospital serve as the home for the Inova CIRH,” said IMVH’s top executive, Roberta Tinch. “I am excited to partner with a highly experienced national leader to fill a gap for our community, so patients and families no longer need to leave the area for this special level of care.”

Critical illness recovery hospitals, also known as long-term acute care hospitals, commonly care for patients with complex medical conditions such as heart failure, wound or burn care, severe brain injuries, respiratory therapy or ventilator weaning. Among the more than 100 critical illness recovery hospitals that Select Medical currently operates nationwide, the only one in Virginia is the Select Specialty Hospital – Hampton Roads, a 25-bed facility located within the Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia.
