The U.S. Post Office located at Mount Vernon Plaza is on the hunt for a new home.

According to a spokesperson from the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), the Alexandria Community Branch — which has leased a space since 2013 at 7676 Richmond Highway — is currently looking for and evaluating potential new sites but hasn’t identified any specific prospects yet. A USPS notice posted to Nextdoor on Aug. 26 by a branch customer indicated that the Postal Service was proposing moving to a facility within two miles of the existing one that could provide the same level of customer service.

The notice said a new facility was needed “because the landlord has declined to renew the current lease.” Both USPS and Federal Realty, the property manager for Mount Vernon Plaza, declined to comment on the lease negotiations, though USPS said the public will be notified if an official decision to relocate has been reached.

Customers wait in line at the post office at Mount Vernon Plaza.

Patrons of the Alexandria Community Branch who receive a copy of the “Potential Post Office Relocation Comment Period” notice by mail or see it posted in the lobby of the facility have 30 days to provide written comments about the proposal to relocate.

USPS officials said they value customers’ input. “Our goal is to find the most ideal site that best serves the needs of our customers and the operational needs of the Postal Service, so we welcome and encourage customers’ feedback,” said a spokesperson.
