Violent crimes up in Mount Vernon Police District

Year-to-date cases of homicide, forcible rape, aggravated assault and robbery are all higher in Mount Vernon Police District in 2022 than in the past two years, data from Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) shows. 

Mount Vernon Police District encompasses approximately 26 square miles, including the Richmond Highway corridor between the City of Alexandria and Fort Belvoir.

According to FCPD data, the number of homicides within the district between January and September 2022 doubled over the same time period from last year, and the number of robberies more than doubled:

Of the six homicides that took place this year, two of the victims and perpetrators were known to each other, and four were not, said FCPD.

The police department also provided year-to-date stats for all of Fairfax County in 2021 and 2022. A comparative analysis of the data shows that Mount Vernon Police District accounted for one-third of the overall homicide cases in Fairfax County from January through September of this year and nearly one-third of the county's aggravated assaults.

PFC Katie Watts, community liaison officer with FCPD’s Mount Vernon District Station announced Oct. 24 that the FCPD Community Advisory Committee for Mount Vernon District is being restarted to keep community members informed about safety matters and to answer questions. The next meeting will take place on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at Mount Vernon District Station (2511 Parkers Lane) and will be held every other month thereafter on the second Thursday.

Additionally, Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck is holding a Senior Safety Summit at Hollin Hall Senior Center on the morning of Nov. 2. FCPD will be making a presentation at 10 a.m. More information is available here.
