Residents of the Richmond Highway corridor who have missed nearby bowling opportunities since AMF Alexandria Lanes in Penn Daw closed in 2015 and the Fort Belvoir Bowling Center shut down due to COVID in September 2021, have reason to celebrate — the bowling alley on the Army garrison is reopening on a limited basis this month.

According to Fort Belvoir Family and MWR, the bowling center's "soft opening" will start Nov. 17, and the facility will operate during set hours every Thursday through Sunday:

Thursdays: 2 to 9 p.m.

Fridays: 3 to 11 p.m.

Saturdays: 1 to 11 p.m.

Sundays: 1 to 6 p.m.

The bowling center's popular Vortex Grill will offer a limited menu until the restaurant has more team members on board, according to a Facebook post .

Both the bowling alley and grill closed for safety reasons early on in the pandemic, reopened on differing schedules and were simultaneously shut down again last fall with the expectation that they would reopen when Fort Belvoir returned to Health Protection Condition Alpha. That change took place at the end of August 2022; however, the official decision to reopen the bowling center came only after an assessment of costs and budgetary constraints.

Fort Belvoir Bowling Center staff has been "working diligently to get back into operation," said a garrison spokesperson.

The bowling center is located at 5975 Middleton Road.
