Carl Sandburg Middle School, located in the Fort Hunt section of Alexandria, has a new top administrator.

Effective Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022, Eric Underhill will assume the role of principal, according to the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Region 3 leadership team.

Underhill presently serves as principal of Shirley C. Heim Middle School at Stafford County Public Schools, where he has been in the leadership role since July 2021. Before that, he was assistant principal for four years at Swanson Middle School in Arlington Public Schools. He also has served as an instructional technology coordinator, world geography and social studies teacher, and curriculum developer for Arlington Public Schools, according to FCPS Region 3.

Over his 15-year career as an educator, he has helped elevate the student voice in school improvement efforts, launched initiatives to boost grades for at-risk students and instructional skills for paraprofessionals, developed a parent learning series to empower and engage parents, and implemented a response to intervention process that narrowed disproportionate achievement gaps. Additionally, he has led efforts to transform teaching practices to meet the needs of English learners and advocated student access to rigorous coursework.

“Our Region 3 leadership team is excited to welcome an experienced principal who is a strong advocate for students and families, who demonstrates instructional leadership, and who has successful experiences improving school culture,” wrote Grace Taylor, Region 3 interim assistant superintendent.

Underhill officially replaces Dr. Darwin Barker, Sandburg’s former principal who departed in October 2022.
