ALDI to open at South Alex in early March

Details on a grand opening ceremony will become available closer to the store’s opening date.

Just over five years since ALDI signed a contract with Combined Properties to anchor the retail space at South Alex in Penn Daw, the grocery store is scheduled to open at the mixed-use apartment community in early March.

According to ALDI USA’s Divisional Vice President Jeff Baehr, the discount grocer’s new location will feature open ceilings, natural lighting, environmentally friendly building materials and extra storage for fresh produce, meat and dairy. The store will offer grocery pick-up and delivery, and customers will have the option to use self-checkout or the traditional checkout process.

Built by CBG Building Company, South Alex is a 400-unit apartment community comprised of two five-story buildings wrapped around the parking garage. Easily seen from Richmond Highway due to its colorful mural, the property features an art-inspired environment, heated pool, clubroom, fitness center, co-working space and other amenities.

South Alex is holding its official opening ceremony Feb. 22, though residential leasing of one- and two-bedroom apartments began last year.

The apartment community is located on the site of the former Penn Daw Plaza shopping center, which was demolished in mid-2016.

South Alex is located at 2803 Poag Street in Alexandria. Aldi’s official address is 6218 N. Kings Highway.
