Large retail store to close at Mount Vernon Plaza

Bed, Bath & Beyond was one of the four new anchor tenants at Mount Vernon Plaza when it was redeveloped in 2005.

UPDATE #2: Bed, Bath & Beyond provided the following statement to On the MoVe on Feb. 8:

"We have been conducting a comprehensive, store-by-store analysis of our portfolio to ensure we can grow profitably while best serving our customers. As such, Bed Bath & Beyond has decided to close the Alexandria, VA location. We previously shared this information with our valued Associates. While the decision to close a store is always a difficult one, customers can shop online at bedbathandbeyond.com and our mobile app. Store closing sale dates vary by store and will commence and continue over the next few weeks and months.

UPDATE #1: The Bed, Bath & Beyond at 7690 Richmond Highway in Alexandria appeared on an updated list of store closures released by the corporate headquarters on Feb. 7.

The Bed, Bath & Beyond at Mount Vernon Plaza in Alexandria will be closing by the end of March 2023, a store employee confirmed to On the MoVe.

Although the Hybla Valley location wasn’t mentioned on the national retail chain’s closure list released Jan. 30, Bed, Bath & Beyond announced Feb. 7 that it planned to close 150 additional lower-performing stores, which have yet to be identified.

In recent days, local residents noted on the Nextdoor website that the Mount Vernon Plaza store had stopped accepting coupons and product returns. This week, signs have been posted at the store announcing the closure and sales of 10% to 30% off all merchandise.

Bed, Bath & Beyond employee Queen Hughes said she began working at the Mount Vernon Plaza location around six years ago. Many years earlier, she had been employed at the Ames department store, which closed in 2002 and was demolished to make way for Bed, Bath & Beyond and neighboring retailers.

Hughes said she’s sad to see the store go as she made good friends there and enjoyed interacting with customers. One of her daughters also is employed there, and her other daughter is a manager at Bed, Bath & Beyond’s Fairfax location, which also is shutting down operations.

When Bed, Bath & Beyond made its debut in 2005 at the newly redeveloped Mount Vernon Plaza, it was one of property manager Federal Realty’s four new anchor tenants. The other three tenants, Michaels, PetSmart and Staples, still are operating there.

The vacant Sally Beauty store at Mount Vernon Plaza

A few other businesses at Mount Vernon Plaza have recently shuttered or are expected to vacate their space in the near future. The Sally Beauty store located at 7702B Richmond Highway closed recently; in late 2022, Sally Beauty Holdings had announced the planned closure of 350 stores, although it was unclear as of press time whether the Hybla Valley location was one of them.

Additionally, the U.S. Post Office’s Alexandria Community Branch at 7676 Richmond Highway began looking for a new space last August, stating in a written notice that Federal Realty had declined to renew its lease. In late December, the Washington Business Journal reported that Federal Realty had filed suit against the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) for unpaid rent at its Mount Vernon Plaza location and that the post office had until Feb. 28, 2023 to vacate its space. USPS hasn’t responded to recent email inquiries about the status of its moving plans.
