Construction continues at historic Workhouse buildings

Building W13 at the Workhouse Campus will eventually be occupied by Bunnyman Brewing.

Construction work at buildings W13 and W15 at the Workhouse Campus in Lorton is expected to extend into mid- to late summer 2023, Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) spokesperson Sharon North said in a March 22 email.

Originally targeted for completion and tenant fit-out this spring, the historic buildings have required additional remediation due to some previously unforeseen conditions, said North, including the need for additional column footing reinforcements. Those requirements were discovered during the structural verification process, she added.

Building W15 is the same size as W13 and has the same layout.

Once building W13 has been completed and outfitted with basic services like electrical and plumbing, its new tenant, Bunnyman Brewing, will be able to prepare it for occupancy. Bunnyman received county approval this past December to operate a brewery at the site.

DPWES did not indicate whether the county is still actively seeking or has identified a tenant for building W15. According to a project update dated Nov. 21, 2022 on the project website, the Request for Expressions of Interest (RFI) in the buildings had been extended at the time. The RFI describes the two 4,500-square-foot buildings as “mirror images of each other in plan” that will be linked by a brick dining plaza with a rain garden, walkways and landscaping.

Buildings W13 and W15 are located at 9514 and 9517 Workhouse Way in Lorton.
