Plant sales get underway around the Mount Vernon area
Several plant sales are underway or soon to take place around the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria.
Mount Vernon Unitarian Church’s greenhouse is holding its spring plant sale every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m through June 11. Shoppers can find heirloom tomatoes, annuals, herbs and vegetables, perennials, peppers and more. Cash or check only. Location: 1909 Windmill Lane, Alexandria.
Gunston Hall’s third annual plant sale takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday in April and on Sunday, April 30. The attraction is selling herbs, vegetables and flowers popular in the 18th century, including red bee balm, spotted Aleppo lettuce and chervil. The selection will vary each week. Cash and credit or debit cards are accepted. Plants can also be ordered online for onsite pick-up. Location: 10709 Gunston Rd., Mason Neck.
Day two of the American Horticultural Society's 2023 Spring Garden Market will take place April 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at River Farm. Besides finding natives, specialty plants and herbs, visitors can purchase various other gardening items, stroll through the gardens along the Potomac, view art in the manor house and purchase food items. Tickets are $5 for walk-ups or $20 per car, payable by cash or credit card. Location: 7931 East Boulevard Dr., Alexandria.
Finally, on April 29 and 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., George Washington’s Mount Vernon will hold the Mount Vernon Spring Plant and Garden Sale. Shoppers will find heirloom vegetables, herbs and annual flowers, as well as native perennials, trees and shrubs grown in the Mount Vernon greenhouses. Members can shop one day early, on April 28 from noon to 6 p.m., but must reserve preview tickets online. Cash and credit cards will be accepted. Location: 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway, Alexandria. Park in the Conservation Complex and Volunteer Center (CCVC) parking lot.
