Darin Thompson has been named principal of Hayfield Secondary School effective July 5, according to the leadership team from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Region 3.

Thompson replaces Martin Grimm who departed Hayfield for a position in Prince William County Public Schools just before the start of the 2022-2023 academic year. To fill the leadership gap this past year, Hayfield assistant principal Matthew Mough has been serving as acting principal and will continue to do so until the administrative transition this summer.

Thompson has 16 years’ experience as an educator and comes to Hayfield from Varina High School in Henrico, Virginia where he has served as principal since 2020. Before that, he was an administrator for eight years, serving as principal at Caroline Middle School, associate principal at Meadowood High School, and principal and assistant principal at Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Virginia. He also has been a special education department chair, summer school principal, special education teacher and exceptional education teacher.

On his LinkedIn profile, Thompson is also listed as owner of Pivotal Leaders Group, a professional educational consulting company that helps better prepare secondary school principals to eliminate gaps in outcomes for marginalized students.

In 2022, Thompson published a couple of articles in Education Week, including one on how principals can reset after damage to school culture caused by pandemic isolation, and one on how Varina fought a surge in chronic absenteeism.

Thompson holds a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice and a Master of Public Administration in public administration/public policy from Virginia Commonwealth University. He also earned a Master of Education, an Educational Specialist designation and a doctorate in educational leadership and administration from Regent University.
