Celebrate Veterans Day around the Richmond Highway Corridor

Veterans Day falls on Saturday, Nov. 11 this year, and in commemoration of the observance, several organizations and places around the Richmond Highway Corridor are holding events over the next few weeks. Following are several of the events we’re tracking:

Fort Belvoir

Fort Belvoir will hold its annual Veterans Day observance, Thursday, Nov. 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cold War Memorial on Long Parade Field. The garrison will honor all who have served in the military and pay tribute to the patriots and their families who have sacrificed their lives in defense of freedom. The guest speaker will be Lt. Col. (Ret.) Michael Bigelow, historian with the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at Wells Field House, 2104-6028 Goethals Road, building 1810. Military attendees should appear in duty uniform while non-military should wear business attire. Information on installation access, including for visitors, can be found on Fort Belvoir’s website.

National Museum of the U.S. Army

The National Museum of the U.S. Army will hold special visitor activities and commemorations from Nov. 10-12. Besides family-oriented activities, the museum will offer resources for veterans, showcase military stories and artifacts from museum volunteers, show the PBS documentary “American Veteran,” and have a special outdoor flag display along the Path of Remembrance and Warriors’ Plaza. George Washington’s Mount Vernon

In honor of our nation’s veterans, Mount Vernon will admit all active-duty, former or retired military personnel for free on Saturday, Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free tickets do not extend to family members or guests. The estate will hold a special program, including patriotic medleys, a brief history of Veterans Day and a Q&A session with Mount Vernon’s resident fifer. In case of rain, the program will be held in the greenhouse in the upper garden. Veterans are also invited to place a floral tribute at the Tomb, provided by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mount Vernon Springfield Chamber of Commerce

The Mount Vernon Springfield Chamber of Commerce plans to acknowledge the many contributions of veterans to local businesses with a special "Salute to Veterans" at its business breakfast on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Belle Haven Country Club at 6023 Fort Hunt Road. South Fairfax Chamber of Commerce

The South Fairfax Chamber of Commerce plans to honor local veterans and chamber members who served in the military or are military spouses at a networking event on Thursday, Nov. 16 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Laurel Hill Golf Club at 8701 Laurel Crest Drive in Lorton. Light refreshments will be served, and a cash bar will be available. The chamber is also hosting a clothing drive on behalf of Boots to Suits, a clothing program for Virginia veterans who have or will be transitioning to civilian careers. G34.3 Brewing Company

G34.3 Brewing Company is holding a Veterans Day party to show gratitude and support for veterans on Saturday, Nov. 11 from noon to 9 p.m. at 8532 Terminal Road, Suite L in Lorton. There will be food trucks, live music and the release of the brewery’s new Rauchbier. The event is open to veterans, their families and the general community.
