Closed to the public just over a year ago for a major renovation and expansion project, the Mount Vernon Rec Center underwent extensive work on its foundation in 2023 and will gain a second level and internal features over the course of the new year, according to the Fairfax County Park Authority.

Besides conducting demolition activities and expanding the building footprint toward the parking lot, construction workers prepared the pool area for the relocation and expansion of locker rooms and updating of mechanical systems; constructed the footers for the fitness expansion and second ice rink; and poured concrete walls for the fitness area. Additionally, the original entrance to the facility on Belle View Boulevard was removed and relocated to align with the parking area.

The next major step, said Park Authority spokesperson Ben Boxer, will be the addition of the second level.

“Residents will soon see steel being lifted into place to form the structure, followed by roof and walls,” wrote Boxer in an email update. “Once the building is enclosed, work may commence on the internal features of the facility — including the expanded locker rooms and family locker room area, fitness center and indoor climbing wall, ice rinks, track, etc.”

Since the facility was closed last year, the Park Authority has seen an uptick in usage of other local rec centers, said Boxer. That includes a 52% percent increase in visitation at the George Washington Rec Center and an 18% increase at the Franconia Rec Center. Pool hours were increased at George Washington Rec to accommodate the rise in demand.

The Mount Vernon Rec Center renovation project is on track for completion in spring 2025, said Boxer.
