OMVHS nears construction phase of renovation project
The Original Mount Vernon High School (OMVHS) is edging closer to construction, with work potentially starting in late spring 2024, according to Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES).
The exact kick-off date of the renovation project will depend on how soon the county completes the ongoing Guaranteed Maximum Price process and selection of the construction contractor. The county originally had hoped to award the construction contract by the end of 2023. The site and building permit is in process, said DPWES spokesperson Sharon North.
In the meantime, all teen and senior program participants from OMVHS have been transferred to programs at other facilities, said Cristin Bratt, spokesperson for the county’s Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS). Only a few NCS staff members remain at the OMVHS site for drop-ins, said Bratt, and the gymnasium is being used for scheduled activities.
According to the South County Teen Center calendar for January and February 2024, the gymnasium is open Mondays through Saturdays from 6-9 p.m. for various activities, including basketball, pickleball and volleyball.
