With spring finally here and the last freeze date coming up in the next few weeks, many local gardeners are gearing up to start planting. Besides visiting the various garden centers around the corridor, area residents can take advantage of special plant sales that kick off in the month of April:

Mount Vernon Unitarian Church’s greenhouse is overflowing with herbs, perennials, annuals, tomatoes, eggplant and pepper seedlings, according to a recent church newsletter. Between April 2 and mid-June, the church will hold its spring plant sale every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Shoppers can expect to find plants not found in traditional nurseries. Location: 1909 Windmill Lane, Alexandria.

Gunston Hall’s second annual plant sale also starts April 2 and will run every Saturday through May 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The attraction will be selling historic and heirloom varieties from the riverside garden restoration project, including vegetables, flowers and herbs, and every plant comes with an 18th century recipe. Plants may be ordered online in advance starting March 28. Location: 10709 Gunston Rd., Mason Neck.

The American Horticultural Society at River Farm is holding its 2022 Spring Garden Market April 8-9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Besides finding natives, specialty plants and edibles, visitors can purchase various other gardening items, stroll through the gardens along the Potomac, browse in the gift shop and purchase food items. Location: 7931 East Boulevard Dr., Alexandria.

As part of its Earth Day Celebration on April 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Hollin Meadows Elementary School will be selling a variety of plants, including flowers, vegetables and herbs, from the school gardens. The event will also feature food, children’s activities and music. Location: 2310 Nordok Place, Alexandria.

Finally, on April 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., George Washington’s Mount Vernon will hold the Mount Vernon Historic Plant and Garden Sale.
