Traffic Alert: Lane closures on Mount Vernon Memorial Highway

Motorists along the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway between Grist Mill Woods Way and Southwood Drive are advised to pay close attention to signage and road crew flaggers as construction progresses on the new shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., lane closures in either direction are permitted to take place along the highway, according to a spokesperson from Fairfax County Department of Transportation. Construction crews are currently removing trees from the northern side of the road where the 10-foot-wide, asphalt trail will be built.

The construction phase of the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway Trail project is expected to last until Spring 2023. At that time, pedestrians and cyclists will have continuous access to attractions and amenities along the nearly three-mile stretch of road between Richmond Highway and George Washington's Mount Vernon. The project is also designed to enhance pedestrian safety along sections of the highway.
