Newly laid asphalt at George Washington Park courts on Old Mount Vernon Road

Nestled between the George Washington Rec Center and Riverside Elementary School along Old Mount Vernon Road, the former George Washington Park tennis courts have been dismantled and resurfaced in preparation for their conversion into six dedicated pickleball courts and two dual-use courts for tennis and pickleball.

The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) settled on this configuration earlier this month after reviewing public feedback from May on its court improvement proposal. Community feedback to the proposed changes was “largely positive” according to an FCPA spokesperson, aligning with the Park Authority’s recent Pickleball Study Report showing increased demand for the sport.

Now that the new asphalt has been laid, the courts will sit undisturbed for a few weeks until new fencing and nets are installed. FCPA anticipates that the courts will reopen by the end of September 2022, pending unforeseen changes in the construction schedule or weather-related delays.

The new pickleball and tennis courts will be available to the general public on a first come, first served basis, though they can be reserved, if needed, through a park use permit.

The George Washington Park courts are located at 8426 Old Mount Vernon Road.
